The role of a Manager in Animal farm operation in many cases is multipurpose. Reference to the above wheel diagram, Farm Manager's position is in the hub of the wheel. He through different management practices (Spoke of the wheel) keeps the different components of animal production in a symmetrical and harmonious situation (Rim of the wheel) leading to efficient production. If one of the components fails (rim dents) through failure of relevant management practices (Spokes broken), the wheel cannot progress smoothly (Production impaired).

Supported by specialized vets in fields like Health care, Animal Nutrition and Genetics etc., Farm Manager has to make decision for the kind of feeds and forages that are most palatable, easily available and can give economic returns. He organizes identification of breeding stocks (This is a skillful process of selecting the best animals), keeps their records and implement mating plans. He sees that, animals are covered to the optimal guidelines provided by the reproduction physiologist. He considers at what level of increased yield and farming will be profitable. He worries over the harvesting and marketing of the products.

Decision making in Farm operation requires intensive study as one function is always related to other. For example feeding involves feed production or procurement. One has to take decision for any function only after considering the implication for the other components. In modern parlance, the whole gamut of livestock production management activities is considered as a system that comprises of subsystems, which in there own turn comprises of further tertiary system. Computerization or sophisticated Decision Support System is now increasingly becoming an integral part of livestock farming in many countries including India.

Livestock farming in India is no longer a traditional business of certain group of people. Educated entrepreneurs from different social and economic backgrounds are now stepping in to it. The sector also provides many opportunities for horizontal and forward integration. One can go for expansion by:

  • Entering in to a supply chain arrangement either with known organizational consumer or with a finish product manufacturer/ marketer.
  • Entering in to contract farming arrangements with small farms.
  • By entering the value added product market either in a small or a big way.
